Question asked by al: How do the Oscars (Academy Awards) work?
What I mean is how do actors and movies get nominated? I always thought that the academy members or whatever just went out to see films and decided who should be nominated – but I have been told recently that someone needs to .. nominate them to be nominated for an oscar?
I don’t know…
Sooo, how do the Oscars work??

I’m going to provide a “short” version.
First, films must be of a certain length & play for a specified amount of time in certain markets.
When a film makes the “okay” list from the Academy, the studios then put together screening dates for those films, mostly at studios, sometimes at rented screening rooms. Members of the Academy then go see those films & vote on which ones they want to be “in the running” for Best Picture.
From those nominations, the top x-number of films are chosen, from which the Best Picture votes are taken.
For Acting, only Actors do the first round of voting for x-amount of nominations for the final ballot. When the final actor selections are chosen, the all members of the Academy can vote.
they are political and popularity contests, there is no way to compare two different acting performances in two different films. Film acting is as much the work of the screenwriter, director, lighting, FX, editing as it is acting. The Awards shows are farces. It should not be Best Actor, it should be Most Popular Performance by an Actor.
